Animal massacre following? MPs pass the law allowing public administration offices to put down stray dogs The bill dealing with stray dogs handling, which allows animal euthanasia as well has been passed on Tuesday by the Chamber of Deputies and is going to promulgation. 168 votes were passed for and 11 against while 14 MPs didn't vote. Several people who were overseeing the vote started crying and yelled " Animal killers! Shame on You!" The opposition has accused power of supporting a law that will allow mayors to put down all stray dogs and will condone brutal treatment for animals. PSD and PNL MPs claimed the law was only to the benefit of certain mayors who want to get richer through killing stray dogs. Another issue the opposition invoked is that the law doesn't condone unitary solutions, and the areas where dogs will remain on the streets will become a migration point. In turn, the ruling party MPs claim the law allows each local council to decide, after they have consulted with the citizens. The law was vehemently challenged by animal rights organizations from both Romania and abroad and most MEPs have contested it, especially the ones from PSD.
